Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Symptoms & Prevention
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or altitude sickness is an illness that may happen during a high elevation journey. There are high chances of getting AMS on the EBC Trek because of a sudden change of altitude. Also, know that altitude sickness can occur to anyone regardless of age and physical fitness. With this in mind we take a very careful ascent profile with ample rest days and take all necessary measures to aim to prevent AMS - see more information below.
Symptoms of altitude sickness
- Difficulty in sleeping
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea or vomiting
- Shortness of breath with exertion
Preventive measures
- Include an adequate number of rest days in the itinerary
- Keep yourself hydrated
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages
- Do not gain more than 500 meters in a day
- Try to spend the night in lower altitude
- Acclimatize properly at a lower altitude
- Inform your guide immediately if any of the symptoms you see
- Do not push yourself
Best time to go to Everest Base Camp
Besides Monsoon, you can do the Everest Base Camp Trek throughout the year. However, Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) is the best time to go. The weather is more stable during this time of the year, and a moderate climate makes the journey a little bit easier.
Talking about winter, it is a more preferred time for photographers. Winter offers the best shots of the Himalayas, valleys, and villages. It is possible to go on Everest Base Camp Trek in winter, however, the climate will be extremely cold, which might not be suitable for everyone.

Your overnight stay will be in either lodges or guesthouses on the Everest Base Camp Trek. The lodge/guesthouse offers basic rooms that are generally on a twin-sharing basis. You might find a single room in some villages, but it is not guaranteed. In the city, you will stay overnight in a 3-star hotel or as per your budget.

Meals are served as per the menu of the lodge/guesthouse. You will be shocked to see the menu as there are a variety of options available from Nepali dishes to Continental and Indian. The taste will not be like any fancy restaurants but the dishes will be fulfilling. You can also find bakeries items, snacks, bars, coffee, tea, etc.
You can find boiled water in every lodge/guesthouse and refill your reusable water bottle. For extra safety carry water purification tablets with you. We strongly request you not to buy plastic water bottles on the way as it will help to preserve the region.
