About Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang Trek is an adventurous journey that leads to the last forbidden kingdom, Lo Manthang. Trekking to Upper Mustang was closed until 1990 for foreigners. Upper Mustang Trekking lets you traverse the Buddhist kingdom closely tied with Tibetan culture, language, and practices. As Upper Mustang is one of the remotest parts of Nepal, the culture and nature here is well preserved. The region is not developed and still practices the ancient way of living.

One of our representatives will pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. Rest and get refreshed. Later, in the evening, you meet with other team members over traditional welcome dinner and cultural dance. Stroll some time in the colorful and lively streets of Thamel and end your day.

Today, you will go on a sightseeing tour for various UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After having breakfast, you meet with your tour guide and drive to the sites. You visit places like Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhnath Stupa, Swayambhunath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Later, in the day, you will also prepare for the trek.

You are going to travel to the city of lakes, Pokhara today. You have two options to reach Pokhara either by driving or taking a short flight. Both ways, you get to see beautiful landscapes and mountain views. Upon reaching Pokhara, you head to the hotel. In the evening, stroll on the vibrant market of Lakeside. You can also go on boating on tranquil Fewa Lake.

After having a delicious breakfast, you take a scenic flight to Jomsom. During the flight, you can see tempting views of snow-capped Himalayan mountains and breath-taking sceneries. Upon landing at Jomsom, you meet with other team members who will join you on the journey. The trail from Jomson moves through a small village and ascends towards Kagbeni.

Before leaving Kagbeni, you register your permits. The trail moves along the Kali Gandaki River. Facing the strong wind, you ascend on a hill and reach Tangbe village. From here, following narrow alleyways, you pass by white-washed houses and buckwheat fields. Further, you pass by one more village and cross a river to reach Chele.

The trail will get tough from here onwards. Today, you have to cross two passes: Taklam La Pass (3,624m) and Dajori La Pass (3,735m). Likewise, the trail also offers stunning views of Tilicho Peak, Damodar Danda, and Yakawa Kang. Passing by Ramchung Cave, the trail descends to Samar village. Further, you ascend and then descend on a steep path to reach a stream. From here, you trek and reach Syangboche.

The trail gradually ascends towards Yamda La Pass (3,850 m). Walking through small settlement areas, lush forests, and barley fields, you reach Nyi La Pass (4,010 m). Further, you drop down to Ghami, one of the biggest villages in the Lo region.

The day begins with a descend through the rugged and slippery trail. You then cross a suspension bridge over Ghami Khola and ascend. The trail passes by ancient mani walls. Crossing Tsarang La Pass (3,870 m), you reach Tsarang village, which is located at the top of Charang Chu canyon with dense forests and old-red gompa.

After having a warm breakfast, you begin descending to a canyon and cross a river. The trail then ascends to Lo La Pass (3,950m) from where you get to see fantastic views of Lo Manthang village. The trail from pass drops down to Lo Manthang village, surrounded by huge walls. From this village, you get to see wonderful views of Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, Bhrikuti Peak, etc.

Today is a rest day in Lo Manthang. You explore the village and visit three major gompas Jhampa, Thupchen, and Chhoeda. Over the last two decades, these three gompas have gone through a major restoration. Later, you also hike to Tingkhar, a beautiful village in the northwest of Lo Manthang. It is going to be enjoyable.

Following a different route, you trek back from Lo Manthang. The trail passes by Gtakar village, where you visit a century-old Ghar Gompa. After exploring the gompa, you continue trekking towards Dakmar for a night stay.

The day begins early today. You begin trekking early to avoid strong winds. The trail from Dakmar descends through dry plateau and fields. It can be a tough day because of strong winds, yet you get to see tempting views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Nilgiri.

After having a warm breakfast, you begin trekking towards Chhusang. The trail passes by small villages with a few ascends and descends. You get to enjoy superb scenery on the way to Chhusang.

  • Altitude: 2980 mtr.

Today, you join the Annapurna Circuit trail to reach Kagbeni. The trail gradually descends through fields and small villages. Enjoying stunning views of snow-capped Himalayan mountains and lovely apple orchards, you reach Kagbeni.

Following the same trail behind, you trek back to Jomsom. The trail descends through beautiful apple orchards and picturesque small villages along with offering stunning views of snow-capped mountains.

After having breakfast, you take a scenic flight back to Pokhara. During the flight, you get to see aerial views of the Himalayan mountains. Upon landing at the airport, you then take another flight back to Kathmandu.

You will have the entire day to yourself to explore the local market and do shopping. In the evening, you will join the farewell dinner organized by the company.

What to expect during Upper Mustang Trek?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Symptoms & Prevention

Acute Mountain Sickness or the altitude sickness usually happens because of a high altitude journey when your body faces drastic changes in elevation. Therefore, it is very important to have a well-planned itinerary and ample rest days to avoid it. We have to make sure to add adequate rest days in our Upper Mustang Trek itinerary to smoothly operate the journey.

Symptoms of altitude sickness

  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath with exertion

Preventive measures

  • Include an adequate number of rest days in the itinerary
  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages
  • Do not gain more than 500 meters in a day
  • Try to spend the night in lower altitude
  • Acclimatize properly at a lower altitude

Best time to go to Upper Mustang Trek

Spring (March to April) and Autumn (October to November) is the best time of the year to go on Upper Mustang Trek. These two seasons have the most stable weather and pleasant climate, which is ideal for a smooth journey. You can see a range of flora on the trail in spring, whereas autumn celebrates numerous festivals all around Nepal.

Accommodation during Upper Mustang Trek

During Upper Mustang Trekking, you stay overnight in the teahouse. The teahouse offers basic facilities with a small twin-sharing room and shared washroom. You might get hot shower service at some places. A single room is usually not available and even if you get one, you may have to be double the price. We highly recommend you carry a good quality sleeping bag with yourself as it can get quite cold during the night. 

Food & Water on Upper Mustang Trek

The meals will be served as per the menu of the teahouse. You get three meals a day. Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan dishes are usually available in this part of Nepal. Among all the dishes, we highly suggest you incorporate dal bhat in one meal at least, as it is the most affordable, delicious, and nutritious meal. You can also carry snacks and bars to munch while trekking. Likewise, you can also find boiled water for drinking in every village.
